Planet Zoo is a management and construction simulation where players build and operate a zoo. There is no single story campaign with one protagonist, but Career Mode includes a sequence of scenarios with characters, objectives, and different zoo-management problems. Players need to create habitats, care for animals, manage staff, control finances, and keep visitors satisfied. The game also includes sandbox and challenge-focused modes for players who prefer building without following a fixed sequence of scenarios.
Building Habitats for Different Species
Each animal species has specific requirements for space, terrain, temperature, shelter, plants, social groups, and enrichment. Players must design habitats that match these needs while also giving visitors good viewing areas. Animals can become stressed or unhealthy if their environment is unsuitable, so the zoo layout affects both animal welfare and visitor experience. Breeding is also part of the game, and offspring can inherit genetic characteristics from their parents.
Managing the Zoo Behind the Scenes
Running the zoo involves much more than placing animals inside enclosures. Players need to manage money, employees, research, facilities, and visitor services. Important tasks include:
路 building habitats and barriers;
路 buying, selling, and trading animals;
路 hiring keepers, veterinarians, mechanics, and security staff;
路 researching animal species and new facilities;
路 providing food, water, shelter, and enrichment;
路 building shops, toilets, paths, and viewing areas;
路 managing ticket prices, loans, staff salaries, and zoo income.
Veterinarians can research animals to unlock additional information and enrichment items, while mechanics research new building themes, barriers, and facilities. Staff also require work zones and staff buildings to perform their jobs efficiently.
Career, Franchise, and Sandbox Modes
Career Mode acts as the closest thing to a structured campaign. Each scenario introduces a zoo with specific goals, such as improving animal welfare, increasing visitor numbers, expanding the park, or solving financial problems. Franchise Mode allows players to build multiple connected zoos and trade animals through an online market, while Challenge Mode provides a similar management structure without the shared online economy. Sandbox Mode removes many restrictions and allows players to focus mainly on building and experimenting.
The main gameplay loop consists of expanding the zoo, adding new species, improving habitats, solving management problems, and balancing animal welfare with visitor needs and finances. There are no traditional action levels or combat sections. Planet Zoo is mainly about designing functional habitats, maintaining a stable business, breeding healthy animals, and gradually developing a larger and more complex zoo.
