GMod is a sandbox game where players use objects, characters, vehicles, weapons, and physics tools to create their own situations instead of following a fixed campaign. There is no main story, set protagonist, or sequence of levels. A session can involve building structures, testing physics, fighting NPCs, driving vehicles, creating scenes, or joining multiplayer servers with completely different rules. The game provides a collection of tools and maps, while players decide what they want to do with them.
Building With Physics and Props
One of the main parts of GMod is the Sandbox mode. Players can spawn props, ragdolls, NPCs, vehicles, weapons, and other objects through the spawn menu. The Physics Gun allows objects to be picked up, rotated, frozen in place, and moved around the map. The Tool Gun provides additional functions for connecting objects, changing their properties, creating mechanisms, and building working constructions. There are no traditional objectives in Sandbox mode, so a player can continue experimenting as long as they want.
Different Ways to Play
GMod also supports many multiplayer game modes that give players specific objectives. The exact content depends on the server and installed addons. Common activities include:
路 building structures and machines in Sandbox;
路 playing Prop Hunt and hiding as environmental objects;
路 completing rounds in Trouble in Terrorist Town;
路 participating in role-playing servers;
路 racing or driving custom vehicles;
路 fighting other players or NPCs;
路 exploring custom maps and community-created scenarios.
Some modes introduce rounds, teams, classes, money systems, jobs, or special rules. Because of this, two GMod servers can play almost like entirely different games.
Players can also use NPCs to create battles or scenarios. Friendly and hostile characters can be placed around a map, equipped with weapons, and positioned alongside props and vehicles. Weapons can be used directly by the player, while explosives, traps, and physics objects can be combined to create more complicated situations. Maps range from simple open construction areas to cities, interiors, horror locations, race tracks, and puzzle environments.
Addons Change What Is Possible
A major part of GMod is the ability to add community-created content. Addons can introduce new maps, weapons, vehicles, NPCs, tools, character models, scripted systems, and complete game modes. Players can therefore turn the basic sandbox into a horror game, role-playing environment, combat arena, construction simulator, or something completely different. GMod is mainly about using its physics systems and large collection of tools to create, experiment, play custom modes, and interact with other players.
