Gang Beasts is a multiplayer fighting game where players control soft, unstable characters and try to knock opponents out or throw them out of an arena. There is no traditional story campaign with characters, chapters, or missions. The game focuses on short matches played in different locations, with physics affecting movement, attacks, and collisions. Matches can be played against other people or AI-controlled opponents depending on the mode.

Fighting Across Different Arenas

Instead of traditional levels with a beginning and an end, Gang Beasts uses separate arenas. Each one has its own layout and hazards that influence how the fight develops. Players can battle on moving trucks, rooftops, construction sites, elevators, subway platforms, industrial areas, and other locations. Some stages contain dangerous machinery or edges that can eliminate a character immediately if they fall too far.

Controls, Grabs, and Knockouts

The controls are based on movement, jumping, grabbing, punching, kicking, and lifting. Characters can hold opponents with either hand, drag them across the floor, or try to carry them toward a dangerous part of the arena. Important actions include:

路         punching and kicking opponents;

路         grabbing with one or both hands;

路         lifting knocked-out characters;

路         climbing ledges and structures;

路         jumping between platforms;

路         throwing opponents from the arena;

路         avoiding environmental hazards.

A player is not always eliminated after being knocked unconscious. Characters can wake up again after a short time, giving them another chance to escape. Because of this, knocking someone down is often only the first step. The attacker usually needs to move the opponent toward an edge, machine, or other hazard before they recover.

Modes and Match Objectives

Different game modes change the objective while keeping the same physics-based controls. In Melee, players fight individually until one remains. Gang mode divides players into teams, while Waves places players against groups of AI enemies. Football changes the focus from fighting to moving a large ball into the opposing goal, although players can still grab and interfere with each other during the match.

The main challenge comes from controlling the deliberately awkward characters while reacting to other players and the arena itself. Attacks are not precise in the same way as in traditional fighting games, so positioning and timing are important. A player can win by using punches and grabs effectively, but environmental awareness is often more useful. Gang Beasts is therefore built around short competitive matches where players fight, climb, grab, and use stage hazards to remove opponents from play.
